Lee’s Report from Fools Gold 2009
Jon, Alicia, and I loaded up and headed for the hills of Dahlonega last Friday for the 3rd annual Fool's Gold 100 mountain bike race. We arrived late that afternoon to register at Dahlonega Wheelworks, a local bike shop, and check into our room which was really nice if you are partial to creepy atmospheres that make the hotel in The Shining look like Club Med. After an uneasy nights sleep, we tossed our bikes into the back of the truck on an unseasonably cool morning and drove to the race for a 7:00 a.m. (eastern) start for the field of 70+ participants in the 100 mile race.
Jon’s Report from Fools Gold 2009
Well the day started off pretty good. It was a cool morning with an overcast sky. There were a handful of people that were starting the 100 mile race. I reckon there were about 70 or so. Well the start wasn’t that fun for someone who was unsure the course. We rode about 75 yards across a field turned right onto a dirt road and began climbing. There were a few dips in the way but ten miles later the trail turned downward. A ten mile hill that starts the race…. Boo. I felt pretty good at the top of the hill and started the descent. It was a fun descent with a handful of steep sections in it and being a dirt/logging road, high speeds were pretty much demanded by the road.
Nissan Xterra Duathlon Results
Somehow I missed this earlier, but congratulations to Lee Neal and Matt Holdbrooks for finishing 2nd and 3rd overall in the Nissan Xterra Duathlon back in May.
